Kumaon Charitable Trust is committed to sustainable development for the hill peoples of Kumaon and the preservation of Himalayan biodiversity in the region.

Sustainable Development

The baseline for all our activities, namely the development of biodiversity farms, promotion of Kumaon hill products and afforestation programs comprising ethnic species, would focus on enhancing sustainable development locally. This would be achieved by bringing about a balance in Health security, Economic security, Nutritional security, Food security, and Ecological security - collectively known as HENFE factors.

Promoting Kumaon Hill Products

We will promote the sale of specific products like High Altitude Kumaon Cow Ghee, Kumaon Goat Cheese, High Fibre Hill grains, Kumaon Cinnamon, Medicinal Lemon Pickles, Hill Ginger, Mango Candy and Kumaon Bayleaf under the brand KUMAONTRUST.  KCT will assist in the formation of women owned & managed self help groups. Products will be purchased from them and individual farmers at a fair price. These products will be sold through KUMAONTRUST shops. These shops will also sell products made by other NGO's & Mahila Gruh Udyogs based in Kumaon. The shops will be franchised either to ex-servicemen or differently abled persons who have passed graduation. The first KUMAONTRUST shop will start in Berinag town of Pithoragarh district.

Afforestation Program with Ethnic Species

We will set into motion a massive afforestation program: One Billion Trees & One Billion Plants. This project, spread over 15 years, will primarily involve middle school to college students. The afforestation project will have continuous planting events. Only species ethnic to the zone will be planted and will include a combination of the following: flowering plants, fruit trees, trees of religious importance, medicinal plants, broad leaf/oxygen giving trees, and spice trees. In years to come this planting combination will help both the local economy & ecology. The pilot project will start from Dholkatiya village.
